Thanks to the large amount of light, plants and flowers available and high levels of biodiversity, more than 50 species of butterflies have been recorded on the Isle of Elba.
Some of these butterflies are endemic:
Lycaeides villai (4) was seen in 1958 and ranked as Lycaeides argu, but later studies showed that these specific specimens were so different that they could be considered a distinct species, but similar to a Sardinian-Corsican endemism (Lycaeides bellieri).

Zerynthia cassandra of Elba (7) or butterfly of San Piero, was first sighted in 1932 and for some alleged differences with continental populations, described as endemic.
It was then reissued in 2008.
This butterfly nourishes of Aristolochia rotunda (8-9)
